Help4Homes: Help to keep your home warm and your energy bills down

If keeping your home warm costs more than you can afford, Help4Homes may be able to help with energy-saving advice, funded appliances or improvements to your home. Ask us and we'll check what applies to you.

Could Help4Homes help me?

Help4Homes supports low-income households in fuel poverty, which means keeping warm costs more than they can reasonably afford.

You may be eligible if

  • your household is on a low income, or your energy costs are high compared with your income
  • someone in your home gets a means-tested benefit
    Which benefits count?

Such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit or Housing Benefit.

  • your council has referred you through LA Flex, the council's own eligibility route
  • you use a prepayment meter (some areas only)
  • your home has an EPC rating of D to G, on the energy scale that runs from A to G
    More about EPC ratings

An EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rates how energy efficient a home is, from A to G.

Not every route applies in every area, and you don't need to work this out yourself. Ask us and we'll check for you.

If Help4Homes isn't right for you, we'll tell you about other schemes you may be eligible for where you live.

Asking us is free. Asking us about Help4Homes doesn't commit you to anything, and it doesn't guarantee funding or improvements.

What support might be available?

We choose support that suits your circumstances, which can include:

  • Energy-saving advice for your home and bills
  • Funded appliances, such as a new fridge or washing machine
  • Bigger improvements where they suit your home, such as solar panels to cut electricity costs, or a heat pump if your home's insulation and structure can support one
  • Checks on other support and schemes you may be eligible for
  • Signposting to additional benefits
  • A named adviser who explains each step, in plain language

What happens if you get in touch

Step by step, at your pace. The exact steps depend on the support that's right for you.

  1. We get in touch, or you contact us

We'll always tell you who we are, why we're contacting you and who we're working with.

  2. We talk through your situation

An adviser talks you through what's on offer, what it means and what would happen next.

  3. We understand your home

A visit, at a time that suits you, to understand your home and household.

  4. We agree the right support with you

Advice, measures or appliances chosen for your home, explained before anything is agreed.

  5. The work is carried out

Installers you've been told about do the work, to one standard, and tidy up afterwards.

  6. Checks and sign-off

We check the work, ask you to sign it off and show you how to use anything new.

Checking a visitor is genuine

Our team carry photo ID and will have arranged the visit with you first. If you're not sure, don't let them in. Ask them to come back another time, and call us on 01160 000000, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, to check the visitor's name before you let anyone in. Outside those hours, send us a message with the visitor's name and we'll confirm.

Common questions

Will I have to pay anything?

If you're eligible for Help4Homes, there's nothing to pay.

What if I'm not eligible?

We'll still help. Our advisers can tell you about other schemes you may be eligible for, based on where you live and your situation.

How do I know a visitor is genuine?

See Checking a visitor is genuine above, which explains what to do.
